Which of the following ions contains both sigma and pi covalent bonds?
- OH-
- Cl0-
- CN-
- PO4 3-
- SO4 2-
I know this question is really asking which ion has double or triple bonds, but I can find structures of the sulfate ion with double bonds. Why is CN- the right answer?
This question is assuming that when you draw the structures for the different molecules, you will draw structures that obey the octet rule (again, this assumption makes this question less than savory). You can draw all of the structures except the CN- obeying the octet rule and with single bonds only.
